Polk County Jail Release Paths

Polk County Jail is the county's central adult detention facility. It holds pretrial detainees and people serving local court-imposed sentences. A booking can end in several ways. Someone may walk out to the community after valid bail, a court release order, dismissal, time-served credit, or sentence completion. Staff may instead turn the person over to ODOC, another county, federal authorities, ICE, or an agency that lodged a detainer.

Those outcomes all end the active Polk jail stay, but only the first is a community release. Chapter 48 requires an Intake Log entry with the name, booking number, date and time released, charges released on, release type, authorization, and the person or agency receiving the prisoner. The destination is crucial. It prevents “released by Polk” from being mistaken for “free from custody.”

A scheduled book-and-release can also create booking and release entries without a normal jail stay. The type and authorization fields make that event clear. Always match the release row to the five-digit jail ID, booking number, date of birth, or court case when those identifiers are available.

Confirm a Polk Jail Release

The Polk Inmates In Custody roster is a useful first check, but only for present custody. Its page updates hourly and displays charges, bail, a release date if the person is sentenced, the next court date, attorney information, and a jail ID. The sentenced date is prospective. Once release is processed, written procedure calls for the person's deletion from the roster.

1. Check the current roster once. Record the five-digit jail ID and booking details when the correct person is still listed.
2. After the name disappears, submit the Request Inmate Information form or call Jail Records at 503-623-9254.
3. Ask for actual release date and time, booking number, charges released on, release type, authority, and destination.
4. Read the destination before choosing the next system. Use OOS and VISOR for ODOC, the receiving county for another jail, and federal or ICE sources when named.
5. Check the correct court case for the order, judgment, dismissal, sentence, warrant, or other legal basis.
6. Request the Intake Log and jail-file release documents when an official or lasting copy is needed.

The jail, sheriff's administrative office, and court-record window use related but distinct locations. Polk County Jail is at 884 SE Jefferson Street in Dallas. The Sheriff's Office lists its mailing and administrative address at 850 Main Street. Jail Records uses 503-623-9254. The sheriff's main number is 503-623-9251, and its listed office hours are weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with holidays closed.

The bail and Criminal Court Records window is in the jail building. An in-person jail release inquiry and a sheriff records request are not always handled at the same counter. Note: Give staff the booking number or five-digit inmate ID when possible, since a name alone may match more than one booking.

Request Polk Jail Release Records

Use the direct inmate-information form for a status answer. For documents, use the sheriff's Reports and Records Checks route and name the existing jail record. A focused request can ask for the Polk County Jail booking and release log for the named person and booking date, including the actual time, release authority, destination, booking number, and charges released on.

The sheriff says requests may be faxed or emailed and that payment can be required in advance. Its schedule lists $15 for the first 15 report pages and $1 for each added page. Records-check research is $15 per name or address. Those published amounts do not establish the cost of every release-log request, so ask for an estimate when the date range is broad.

Polk states that it responds within five business days as time permits. Oregon's Public Records Law sets separate acknowledgment and production rules. Production may take longer due to fees, clarification, legal review, or an impracticability notice. Ask for electronic copies and segregable public fields. Juvenile, sealed, medical, victim, witness, safety-sensitive, and investigative content can be withheld or redacted.

The arresting agency and jail may hold different records. Polk County Jail controls its booking and release material. An incident narrative may belong to Dallas, Independence, Monmouth, Salem, Oregon State Police, or another agency. Polk Jail Release Processing

Chapter 48 provides a rare view into local release operations. For a person completing a local sentence, processing ordinarily occurs between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. unless another release time has been directed. Staff must verify the authority and check for detainers. They reconcile money and property, complete the log, place signed release documents in the jail file, remove the person from the roster and population count, and direct a community release through the intake area on the east side.

Bail and court-ordered releases do not necessarily follow the ordinary sentence-end window. They occur after valid authority arrives and staff can complete required checks. The jail FAQ gives about one hour after bail as a general rule, while warning that timing depends on court action, staffing, and jail activity. It is an estimate, not an appointment or proof of release.

Polk Jail Property Release

Property has its own local route and must not be confused with custody release. Polk seals pocket property as one small-property bag. A person who remains in custody can authorize release of the whole bag or money on the required form. The recipient goes to Door 4, marked Bail/Release, uses the speaker, and shows identification. Staff do not open the bag so selected items can be removed.

Because a current inmate can authorize property pickup, the transfer of a bag does not prove the owner left jail. Final release processing is different. Chapter 48 requires staff to reconcile the person's property and account as part of the completed custody event. The release log and jail-file papers, not the pickup itself, confirm that event.

Families should call before traveling if timing matters. Door instructions, staffing, and authorization requirements can change. The current inmate must complete the required authorization for a pre-release pickup, and the recipient must be ready to establish identity.

Polk County Jail History

The current Polk County Jail was completed in August 1999. The sheriff lists a capacity of 195 people. It serves local criminal-justice agencies by holding pretrial detainees and people serving county sentences. These sourced figures support its role as Polk's only facility page. ODOC's institution list shows no state prison in the county, and nearby FCI Sheridan is in Yamhill County.

The building also creates a useful records distinction. Criminal court records are housed in the jail building, while other court divisions use the courthouse and annex. Physical closeness does not merge the records. The jail's release log establishes the custody event, and the criminal judgment or register explains the legal case.

A 2020 sheriff report documented a U.S. Marshals bed agreement at that time. No current confirmation was found, so that detail belongs only to history. It should not be read as evidence of a present federal contract or of any particular person's federal custody.
